Grand Canyon helicopter tours at a glance

Grand Canyon helicopter tours start from two very different places. At the South Rim, flights take off from Grand Canyon National Park Airport in Tusayan, just outside the park, and loop over the national park for half an hour or so. From Las Vegas, helicopters fly over Lake Mead and Hoover Dam to Grand Canyon West, where some tours land below the rim on Hualapai tribal land.

The first option is short and makes sense if you are already at the South Rim. The second is a half-day trip from your hotel and the only way to land inside the canyon. Neither one takes you into the national park on the ground, so plan a separate visit to the rim if you want to walk the viewpoints.

Flight-free zones: why the routes look the way they do

The airspace over Grand Canyon National Park is a Special Flight Rules Area regulated by the FAA. Large parts of the park are flight-free zones, set aside to protect natural quiet for hikers and rafters. Tour helicopters may only use fixed corridors at set altitudes above the rim, and they do not land inside the national park.

That is why South Rim flights from Tusayan follow almost the same loop, whichever operator you choose, and why the longer flights differ mainly in how much of the canyon they cover. It is also why landings below the rim happen only at Grand Canyon West, which lies outside the national park on Hualapai land.

For you this means two things. A short Tusayan flight shows you the depth and the side canyons of the national park, but from above the rim. If standing at the bottom of the canyon is the goal, you need a West Rim landing tour, most easily from Las Vegas.

Weight, seats and check-in

Helicopters are balanced by weight, so the rules are stricter than on a bus tour.

Weight

Operators ask for each passenger's weight at booking and weigh everyone again at check-in. Above a set limit, often somewhere around 275 to 300 lb (125 to 136 kg), you have to buy an extra seat. Check the limit for your tour.

Seating

The pilot assigns seats to balance the aircraft. Front or window seats are rarely guaranteed unless you pay for them. Some operators use helicopters with wide panoramic windows.

Children and ID

Small children usually need their own seat, and adults must show a government-issued photo ID. Bring your passport.

Check-in

Arrive at least 30 minutes before take-off for weighing and the safety briefing. Loose items and bulky bags stay on the ground.

South Rim or Las Vegas: which flight to book

  • You are visiting the South Rim anyway: book a Tusayan flight in the morning, when the air is often calmer, and spend the rest of the day at the viewpoints. A flight does not include park entry. If you drive into the park, the $35 vehicle fee and the $100 nonresident fee per person aged 16+ apply (as of 2026).
  • You only have Las Vegas: a flyover or landing tour to Grand Canyon West is the fastest way to see the canyon in half a day. Some tours combine the flight with Skywalk entry, so check what is included.
  • You want the South Rim from Las Vegas: a small plane from Boulder City is the realistic option, with a ground tour on arrival. Our Grand Canyon tours comparison covers that and the other formats.

Flights are cancelled in strong wind, storms or low cloud. Book a tour with free cancellation and leave a spare day if you can. For the best months, see the best time to visit Arizona.

Grand Canyon helicopter tours: frequently asked questions

How long is a Grand Canyon helicopter tour?

From Tusayan at the South Rim, usually about 25 to 30 or 40 to 50 minutes in the air. From Las Vegas, plan about 3.5 to 4.5 hours including hotel transfers.

Can helicopters land in the Grand Canyon?

Not in the national park. Landings below the rim are only offered at Grand Canyon West, on Hualapai tribal land, usually on tours from Las Vegas or at the West Rim itself.

Is there a weight limit for helicopter tours?

Yes. Passengers are weighed at check-in, and above a limit set by the operator, often around 275 to 300 lb (125 to 136 kg), an extra seat must be bought.

Does a helicopter tour include the national park entrance fee?

A flight from Tusayan does not take you into the park on the ground. If you also visit the rim, the 2026 fees apply: $35 per vehicle plus $100 per non-US resident aged 16+.

When is the best time for a helicopter flight?

Mornings often have calmer air and softer light. Spring and autumn bring the most comfortable temperatures, and flights can be cancelled in summer storms or strong winter winds.
